An investigation of activities of daily living according to disability level in elderly people with visual impairment

Abstract
Objective : The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between disability level and activities of daily living(ADL) in elderly people with visual impairment.

Methods : Present study used raw data of 2017 National Survey of the Disabled Persons. Among the total of 6,549 subjects, 344 elderly people with visual impairment were included in the analysis. General characteristics were set as age, gender, family income, educational level, and disability grade, awareness of vision, braille understanding, time point of presence of disability. The ADL was evaluated as 12 areas of basic activities of daily living(B-ADL) and 10 areas of instrumental activities of daily living(I-ADL). Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis.

Results : In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, The higher disability grade of the elderly with visual impairment was female, and the age was increased. In the B-ADL and I-ADL required help for feeding, transfer and preparing meals(R2=.507, p<.01).

Conclusion : As the disability grade of the elderly with visual impairment increases, development of community-based occupational therapy programs for improvements are needed in specific ADL areas.
